Hi everyone! My name is Katie. I am a wife, a nurse, a lesbian, a foodie, a crazy cat lady, a feminist and a wellness lover. I live in a small city in Saskatchewan, Canada with my amazing wife and my two cats (did I mention that I love cats?!). Before we get any further, I do have a confession to make: I’m not actually a mom. So, why call this blog “The Other Mommy”?
My wife and I have made the decision to start a family and while we are both so excited for this journey, we quickly discovered that there would be a few challenges along the way. This blog will document our trials and tribulations from fertility clinic to family, from the very beginning. I hope this blog can be a resource for others looking to go down the same path. Thank you for being a part of our journey and I hope along the way you can have some fun, laugh and learn with me!
The title of this blog was the brain-child of my gorgeous, talented wife. I was in the shower having a conversation about starting my blog with her in another room (as we tend to do) and as soon as she suggested “The Other Mommy”, I just loved it! When you think about it, I would really be the “other mommy” as we embarked on our parenting adventures together. I’m sure we are going to face some unique challenges as same sex parents raising our family. Thank goodness there are a lot of wonderful books and couples who have already started paving the way!
I think the title also speaks to the feeling of “otherness” we can have when we are constantly forced to compare ourselves with the rest of the world. I don’t even have a kid yet and I’m already overwhelmed with pregnancy and parenting advice! As a vegetarian, I’ve already had people telling me that I have to eat meat during my pregnancy! Um, I think I’ll be okay, thanks! Of course everyone has a good intention behind their advice, but it sure doesn’t help out in the self-esteem department. It also doesn’t help that I’m a bit of a perfectionist (thanks, Mom!). As with many areas of life, it’s easy to feel like everyone else has it perfectly together and your life is a bit of a mess (thanks, Facebook!). At least that’s how I feel a lot of the time. I hope to make this blog a space where we can share the mistakes and magic of family life!
We have just completed the first step of the fertility process, the details of which will be in my next post! Have a wonderful day!

Katie, your blog is wonderful! It’s so brace of you to share your journey. You are absolutely right, there is very little precedent for this in Canada. I’m sure this blog will be a great resource for other couples hoping to start a family together! Wishing you both the best of luck!!
PS. Your writing style is hilarious! Love it 😄

(Brave, not brace. I have no idea why autocorrect likes that word so much)
